Paper Drift Bosses: Every Boss and How to Beat It

Every boss in Paper Drift and how to beat it: the Drone, Rockfall, UFO saucer, Saguaro, Ice Wizard and Spectre, plus each map's own obstacles.

Paper Drift has six bosses: the Depot’s Drone, the Foundry’s Rockfall, the Aliens’ UFO saucer, the Desert’s Saguaro, the Glacier’s Ice Wizard and Halloween’s Spectre. Each one hunts your paper plane, and each one warns you before it can hit, so every boss is beaten the same way: read its tell, then move sideways early and decisively. Here’s how to beat each one, plus the obstacles every map brings of its own.

Five ways to die in Paper Drift
Crushed, special delivery, cactus, skewered — and abducted. The hazards that hunt your paper plane.

How Paper Drift bosses work

Bosses are map events that aim at your plane. One arrives with a quake: the camera rumbles, a low boom plays and the phone buzzes. The first time you meet each boss, a ticket on screen names it and gives you a one-line tip.

A few rules hold for all six:

  • Everything lethal is telegraphed: a parcel held up, a rock glowing, a lane lit, a shadow gathering.
  • They move relative to your plane, so they arrive on the same beat at any speed. You can’t dive away; you have to step aside.
  • Every hazard you let past scores a point, just like a beam.
  • They get tougher deeper in a run: more throws, and pairs and forks mixed in with single shots.
  • They are tested to be fair. Before a boss ships, the game’s own test pilot has to beat it twice: once reacting in 60 milliseconds, and once seeing the screen 200 milliseconds late, like a real player.

The two-throw rule

When a boss throws two at once, look at where they land. If one is on you and the other is further out, toward the wall, escape toward the middle of the shaft. If they bracket you, one on each side, hold your line: the gap you are in is the safe one. Some single throws lead you slightly, so dodge decisively rather than drifting.

Boss Map The tell How to beat it
Drone Depot A parcel held up, aim line lit Change lanes as it throws
Rockfall Foundry A glow at the top of the screen Leave the glowing lane
UFO Aliens Its lane lights up Be out before the beam
Saguaro Desert A cactus ball lifted overhead Dodge wide of the roots
Ice Wizard Glacier Cracking ice up top, then the ray Dodge icicles, leave the ray
Spectre Halloween A shadow around your plane Slide out before it fills in

The Drone (Depot)

The Depot, “cardboard girders, stacked parcels, packing tape everywhere”, is a starter map, so this is often the first boss you meet.

What it does. A delivery drone drops in below your plane, keeps pace with you and lobs parcels up the shaft. The in-game tip: “It throws parcels up at you: sidestep them.”

How to beat it.

  • While the drone holds a parcel up, for about a third of a second, its dashed aim line follows you. The parcel flies up the line it had when it let go, so change lanes as it throws.
  • Deep in a run it can throw three abreast. Slip into one of the gaps between them.
The dashed line is the drone's aim. Step off it as the parcel leaves.

The Rockfall (Foundry)

The Foundry is the hard map: “Faster, denser, fewer breathers.” It reaches top speed sooner than the others, though the top speed is the same.

What it does. Molten rocks drop from above. Each one glows at the top of the screen, for about 0.7 seconds, in the lane it will fall down. Some rocks bounce: they leave their glow slanting toward the nearer wall, strike it and come back across the shaft. The tip: “They fall where the top glows — some bounce off the walls.”

How to beat it.

  • Keep one eye on the top edge of the screen. The glow is the lane, and it never moves once it is shown.
  • A bouncing rock’s path is drawn in embers while it glows. Read the V and move to the side it isn’t crossing.
  • After each dodge, settle back toward the middle before the next glow.
A glow at the top of the screen marks each rock's lane.

Bouncing rocks strike the nearer wall and come back across.

The UFO saucer (Aliens)

The Aliens map, another starter, is “purple halls, dripping slime, specimens in jars — and a saucer that wants you.”

What it does. The saucer rises into view below you, slides under your plane and locks a lane: its lights spin up and the lane lights from the saucer to the top of the screen. Then its green tractor beam comes on and the saucer climbs it, pulling you toward the middle. Stay in the beam for half a second and you are abducted, spun down the beam into the dome. The tip: “Don’t stay in its beam: half a second and you’re abducted.”

How to beat it.

  • The lit lane is your warning. Be out of it before the beam comes on.
  • Caught anyway? Bank hard for the nearest edge. The pull is always weaker than your bank.
  • While it is on, the beam drifts after you, but slower than you can bank, and it won’t chase you into the strip beside either wall.
  • It tries three or four times, depending on how deep you are, then leaves.
Green means pull. Half a second inside and you are taken.

The Saguaro (Desert)

The Desert is “sandstone from dawn to starlight, vines that snag — and a cactus that throws.”

What it does. A saguaro riding a dust devil holds station below you and follows your lane. It lifts a cactus ball over its head with an aim line lit, then lobs it up at you. On the way up the ball sprouts roots, level, to both sides, turning a small ball into a bar across about a third of the shaft. You see the roots grow roughly a second before they reach you. The tip: “Its cactus balls sprout roots to the sides: dodge wide.”

How to beat it.

  • Don’t sidestep by a hair. Clear the ball by a wide margin or the roots will find you.
  • The roots always stop short of the walls, so a dodge toward a wall always has room at the end.
  • It never has two throws’ roots in the air at once. Clear one, then look down for the next.
The ball is small. The roots are not.

Too close: the roots reach much further than the ball.

The Ice Wizard (Glacier)

The Glacier is “girders of ice under the northern lights.”

What it does. The wizard floats below you on a cloud of snow. Icicles fall from the top of the screen: first a crack of ice appears in their lane at the top edge, for about 0.7 seconds, then the icicle drops straight down. Its first throw is always an icicle. The frost ray doesn’t kill, it slows. It shoots out of the wand, its tip climbing the screen, and the wizard sweeps it after you. Every moment in the ray chills you more, down to half speed at worst, and the chill thaws over a couple of seconds. The tip: “Dodge the icicles, and keep out of its frost ray.”

How to beat it.

  • The ray’s only warning is the ray itself coming up the screen. When you see it, move and keep moving: it sweeps slower than you bank, even when you are chilled.
  • A graze is only a nudge. Sitting in the ray is what gets you killed, because a slowed plane banks slowly into the next icicle’s lane.
  • The ray won’t follow you right up to a wall. Sliding toward the nearer one, without touching it, takes you out of its sweep.
Icicles kill. The ray only slows, but a slow plane is an easy target.

The Spectre (Halloween)

Halloween is the seasonal map, flown only from 19 October to 8 November: “Pumpkins at dusk, a crypt by midnight.”

What it does. The spectre lays a shadow on your plane, at your level and in your lane. The shadow gathers for about a second, then a ghost appears exactly where it was, solid for a moment, before fading harmlessly. The shadow keeps pace with your fall, so diving doesn’t help. The tip: “Get out of its shadow before the ghost appears.”

How to beat it.

  • Move sideways as soon as the shadow shows. A short, decisive slide is enough.
  • Two shadows, one on each side of you? Stay where you are.
The ghost appears where the shadow was. Be somewhere else.

Everything else about the season is in the Paper Drift Halloween event guide.

Each map’s own obstacles

Most maps also mix their own obstacles into the shaft, and every map has event stretches announced on screen, like “CRANES!” or “LASERS!”.

Map Obstacle Tip
Classic Crates swinging from cranes “Time the swing of the crates”
Aliens Wall lasers “They charge up, then fire across”
Jungle Flytraps “They rear back, then lunge”
Glacier Drifting ice floes “Follow the gap as it drifts”
Halloween Ghosts “Solid while they glow: slip through as they fade”
Desert Sliding slabs and a step pyramid, from the afternoon on Slip past on whichever side is open
Jungle and Desert Vines “You can fly through them, but they slow you down”

Vines never end a run, but a snag slows the plane for half a second.

Tips that work on every boss

  • Bank to thin the barrage. Bosses throw as you pass depth marks, so a banked, slower fall meets fewer throws per second.
  • Stay off the walls. A scrape locks your steering for a moment, the worst possible time with a boss up.
  • Learn them in Slow Mode. It slows the whole game and still counts for your personal bests, though not for the leaderboards.

Questions

How many bosses are there in Paper Drift?

Six: the Depot's Drone, the Foundry's Rockfall, the Aliens' UFO saucer, the Desert's Saguaro, the Glacier's Ice Wizard and Halloween's Spectre. Classic and the Jungle have obstacles of their own instead.

How do you escape the UFO in Paper Drift?

Leave the lane while it is lit, before the green beam comes on. If the beam catches you, bank hard for its nearest edge and keep going. The pull is weaker than your bank, but half a second inside the beam and you are abducted.

How do you beat the Saguaro in Paper Drift?

Dodge wide. Each cactus ball sprouts roots to both sides on its way up, so a sidestep that only clears the ball still meets the roots. The roots always stop short of the walls.

Where do I meet the bosses?

Each boss belongs to its map and turns up as one of that map's events in Endless and Daily Drift. A 60 or 90 second Race on that map usually meets it too.

Do the bosses get harder?

Yes. The deeper into a run you meet one, the more it throws and the trickier its patterns, from single shots to pairs and forks.
